A few years back I lived in Klagenfurt, the capital of Carinthia. Every year I patiently waited for the end of November, because that meant Christmas markets all over the country. And Austrian Christmas markets are really special ❤
Ok, let me show you some nice Christmas markets around the Wörthersee
1.Klagenfurt
Of course you have to visit the capital of this region. 😊 In the city center is the main market on the “Neuer Platz” (new square) in front of the Rathaus (city hall) and the Lindwurm (the statue in the middle of the square). Here you can buy tasty treats and lovely gifts.
Walk further to the Alter Platz (old square) where the entire street is beautifully illuminated. Another nice market is on the Domplatz next to the Cathedral, where the main theme is the old-fashion religious Christmas (it’s open just from Thursday-Sunday).
If you drive outside of the town to the lake, you’ll find beautiful trees illuminated on the shore. There’s also a boat running on weekends connecting other towns around the lake, but the price is pretty expensive (30,90€). So we rather drove around the lake by car.
2. Pyramidenkogel
This is a 100 meter high tower with a viewing platform and a fun slide down on top of a hill. In the evening it’s beautifully illmunated and on weekends there’s a lovely small Christmas market.
3. Velden
Believe me, although this is a relatively small village next to the lake, it has a major attraction: a huuuuge swimming Advent wreath (Adventkranz) – this is the round thing with 4 candles. The market is open on weekends and offers a lot for kids, like ponies and a fairytale boat tour.
There are also some smaller Christmas markets in Pörtschach and Krumpendorf, but when we were there they were closed. But I’m sure if you plan a daytrip, these 3 markets including the capital Klagenfurt will make a nice day for you.

Where would you say the best seasonal markets are in Slovenia? Radovljica, Maribor, Kranj, Ljubljana or maybe somewhere else?

In Slovenia I would definitely say Ljubjana and Koper. 🙂
